Morning Masterclasses

Masterclass 1: Musicians and Their Hearing

Overview
Musicians are regular visitors to the audiology clinic, whether presenting for advice on hearing conservation and hearing protection devices, assistance with diagnosis of hearing pathologies, or for hearing rehabilitation. This interactive workshop will look at various aspects of managing musician clients of all ages, including the epidemiology of hearing pathologies, risks factors, hearing protection technology and strategies for the long-term management of hearing loss.  It will include hands-on training in both the fitting of personal hearing protection including earplugs and ambient in-ear monitor systems as well as the fitting and fine-tuning of hearing devices to optimise the listening experience for both live and streamed music. 

Learning Goals

  • Increased understanding of the epidemiology of hearing pathologies in musicians and the impact on their professional practice
  • Greater awareness of the risks faced by musicians, from school settings through to professional bands and orchestras and how to manage them
  • Knowledge of currently available hearing protection technology and how to fit it correctly and ensure compliance
  • Improved skills in fitting and fine-tuning hearing devices for musical appreciation 

Masterclass 2: Auditory Training for Auditory Processing Disorder

Overview
In this Masterclass participants will explore how three audiology practices in Australia provide auditory training (AT) services for clients with auditory processing disorder (APD).  Participants will rotate through three workstations and engage with the provider who will describe their AT service and provide hands-on demonstrations, case study discussions and audio-visual presentations.

  • Increased understanding of models of auditory training for auditory processing disorder
  • Improved increase awareness of how an individual clinician might provide these services in their own clinic  

Masterclass 3: The Patient with Sudden Profound Hearing Loss: What Do We Say, What Do We Do?

Overview

This interactive masterclass is for any clinician who has been faced with a client who has had a sudden or dramatic deterioration in their hearing. It will provide background information on the possible causes of sudden sensorineural hearing loss and the importance of clear guidelines around management and referral pathways. 

A panel of audiologists from around Australia will describe the similarities and differences in service delivery across the states and the key elements of their management protocols. Referral pathways and management options will be discussed from both an ENT and GP perspective. The role and responsibility of audiologists in improving community awareness and GP education will also be explored.

  • Knowledge of the various conditions that may be associated with sudden hearing loss
  • A better understanding of the role played by various medical services, their assessment approaches and referral pathways
  • A better understanding of the role of the Audiologist in managing the condition

Overview
Cerumen impaction is a common presentation to Audiologists in the audiology clinic. This workshop will review ear canal pathologies and the advantages and disadvantages of different cerumen management techniques. 

Under supervision you will participate in various cerumen management techniques, including extraction of foreign bodies (hearing aid domes, beads, cotton tips, insects etc) and tips and tricks for tricky wax management. 

Learning Goals

  • To review ear canal pathologies and provide a theoretical basis for safe ear canal management including cerumen extraction
  • To understand advantages and disadvantages of different cerumen management techniques and choosing the appropriate technique depending on cerumen type and blockage 
  • To review foreign bodies extraction techniques
  • To participate in various cerumen management techniques including micro-suction & curettage techniques under supervision 
  • To understand practice management issues including, setting up your clinic, ethical issues (including informed consent), infection control and referral requirements.

Afternoon Masterclasses

Masterclass 6: Tinnitus: The Effect of COVID-19 on Clinical Evaluation and Management

  • Covid: the disruptor and its implications for tinnitus management
  • tinnitus models, risk factors, history taking, evaluation, tinnitus in children
  • co-morbid conditions: sleep disruption, trauma, anxiety, depression, hyperacusis
  • effective management strategies, including the role of sound enrichment/hearing aids
  • patient triage: when to refer your patients onwards and who to refer them to 
Case studies and opportunities for discussion will be provided.

Masterclass 8: Using Content to Create Value

Overview
In this Masterclass, Dr Cliff Olson will discuss how to use Written, Audio, and/or Video content to help individuals with hearing loss understand the value of your professional care. This session will tell you everything you need to know about using content to grow your influence among consumers. If you want to start creating content in the Audiology space, this session will save you days of research trying to figure it out on your own.  

Participants will have the opportunity to work in small groups to develop their own topic, create an outline and content, and share it with the whole group. Insights provided by Cliff Olson will enable you to develop and improve your skills in this creative activity.  

Masterclass 9: Understanding Government Funding Models – What is Available and How to Access It

Overview
A panel of experts will explore the different funding sources available in the Australian market, including detailed information about what funding options are available across the lifespan. 

The funding sources to be presented are: 

  • NDIS
  • HSP
  • Medicare Scheme
  •  Job Access
  • My Aged Care / Aged Care Funding
  • DVA

Participants will divide into case study groups to consider funding sources using specific examples. The outcomes from each case study table will be presented back to the main group for further discussion.

  • To increase understanding of the key potential funding bodies in Australia
  • To explore the similarities and differences of funding sources and determine which is most applicable at each stage of a patients’ life
  • To increase knowledge of the processes and procedures required to access different funding sources
  • To explore practical applications of each funding models work, using a case study approach 


Masterclass 10: Hot Topics in Paediatric Audiology: research fidelity, secondary screening and cultural competence

Overview
This masterclass will explore three important topics in paediatric audiology today. It will examine the fidelity of audiological services and early listening and spoken language intervention. Fidelity  measurement has increasing significance for evaluation, treatment effectiveness, and service administration. It will look at protocols for screening for secondary disabilities in audiological appointments (e.g. autism, vestibular disorders). Finally, it will discuss the importance of cultural competence for hearing care professionals who deal with diverse audiological populations.

Learning Goals

The session will include information about: 

  • The importance of assuring evidence-based audiological practice and fidelity of intervention
  • The early identification of secondary disorders such as autism, vestibular disorders and cognitive conditions
  • Working with families who do not speak English as their home language and the importance of cultural competence
  • Working with families with socio-economic differences with a focus on the audiological challenges such as follow-up, amplification usage, language delays
  • The importance of family-to-family support (which is not systematised in Australia)
  • The importance of a Deaf/Hard of Hearing (DHH) leadership network

Masterclass 11: Unpacking the Mastoid; Advanced Audiological Management of Non-Standard Ear Canals

Overview
This interactive workshop will provide a foundation for safely packing a mastoid cavity for the purpose of taking ear impressions used to create hearing aid coupling systems or swimming plugs. It will provide a refresher on ear canal geometry and enable participants to identify key markers in a mastoid cavity. It will review ear impression techniques and provide guidance on taking safe, effective and accurate ear impressions on all clients.  The goal is to ensure any ear mould manufactured on your impressions will provide an optimal hearing outcome for all clients,  regardless of the size and shape of their ear canal.   

Learning Goals 
Following this masterclass participants will be able to:

  • Identify a healthy mastoid cavity that is safe to pack
  • Understand the steps required to safely pack a mastoid cavity
  • Know how to take an ear impression on a packed mastoid cavity
  • Understand when to refer on to appropriate medical practitioner when required
